This beautifully preserved 1980 Porsche 924 Le Mans is one of just around 1,030 Le Mans editions built worldwide, and believed to be one of only 100 right hand drive cars produced to celebrate Porsche’s success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Finished in its original and only Le Mans colour, Alpine White, it still wears the correct three colour side stripes and ‘Le Mans’ script, together with the polyurethane rear spoiler and black finished alloy wheels with lathe turned faces that define this special model.
The interior is in excellent, well-preserved condition, featuring the proper black leatherette sports seats with black/white pinstripe centres and white edging, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, leather gear gaiter and 924-branded door sills all specific to the Le Mans package. Carpets, dash and trim present very well, with original tools, space saver spare, roll up parcel shelf and sunroof bag still with the car.
Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre, 1984 cc inline-four runs through Bosch K-Jetronic injection and produces around 125 bhp, driving the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transaxle. The car benefits from the factory sporting shock absorbers and anti-roll bars front and rear, making it sharper than a standard 924 while still being entirely usable on modern roads.
This example has been enthusiast owned for many years and is well known within the Porsche 924 Owners Club, having appeared in club magazines, on the club stand at major classic shows and even winning awards, including “Best Naturally Aspirated” at a Porsche 924 Owners Club AGM. It has also been displayed at classic car events and photographed at shows such as the Scolton Manor Classic Car Show in 2015, where it appeared as a featured Le Mans edition 924.
The history file is extensive, with:
Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming build date and specification
Original service book and manuals in the rare Porsche red wallet
Large collection of main dealer and specialist invoices
Multiple club magazine articles and features
Period photographs, including use as a family wedding car and images from major classic shows
Several sets of keys, including original metal “lollipop” keys, and original Porsche sales literature.
Early private ownership:
First private keepers: The Matthews family, who kept the car for around 19 years, covering approximately 45,000 miles.
The car was significant to the family, it was even used as their daughter’s wedding car.
Barn storage & minor repairs:
During dry barn storage in the 1980s, part of the barn roof was dislodged in a storm, leading to light cosmetic repairs to the removable sunroof and a front wing.
Another incident involved a cat’s eye being flicked up into the front lower apron, again resulting in minor repair only.
The car otherwise appears to have retained its original panels, stripes and overall factory appearance.
Later enthusiast ownership & club history:
The car became well known to the Porsche 924 Owners Club UK, featuring in club magazines and online articles over many years, including in the club’s publication “TwoFour24”, with a detailed write-up in issue 16.
A previous owner up to April 2018 was a former Chairman of the Porsche 924 Owners Club, who described the car as “almost totally original with perfect interior”
The car has appeared at the NEC Classic Motor Show on the Porsche stand and at other classic events, it can be found photographed online at the Scolton Manor classic car show (Pembrokeshire) in 2015.
It has won club awards including “Best Naturally Aspirated” at a Porsche 924 Owners Club AGM.
Unique paint/graphics:
Alpine White with red, yellow and black side-cheat stripes on UK cars.
Turbo-style rear spoiler, though the engine remained naturally aspirated (not a 924 Turbo).
Exterior features:
Sunroof, rear wiper, and extra mirror on passenger side
Interior touches:
Black leather seats with white piping, more premium than standard trim.
The 924 Le Mans is powered by Porsche’s 2.0 litre, Bosch K-Jetronic injected engine producing around 125 bhp, delivering smooth, linear power through a tight 5-speed transaxle gearbox for excellent balance and weight distribution. Steering is precise and communicative, and the factory fitted sport suspension and upgraded anti-roll bars give this Le Mans edition noticeably sharper handling than a standard 924. Brakes are strong and confidence inspiring, and the car pulls cleanly through the rev range with no hesitation. A genuinely well sorted classic Porsche that feels light, responsive and enjoyable on modern roads.
